Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice Comic-Con Trailer Reaction

When Comic-Con comes around each year, there are certain....standards that companies must meet in the fans eyes, and in particular DC and Marvel. Both companies have millions of fans around the world who eagerly anticipate their movie announcements and news. But when they fail to deliver, the backlash is relentless until they prove themselves worthy again. The pressure was on for DC especially who are desperately playing catch-up with the infinitely more successful Marvel. A first happened a few months ago though: Marvel said they were skipping the Con this year. Why? Could it be Disney saving them for their conventions...or because they knew how difficult it would be to compete with DC's impressive slate of movies: Batman V Superman, Suicide Squad, Green Lantern Corps, Justice League! The best part of all: DC delivered with a stunning full length trailer for Batman V Superman next year. Check it out below and then I'll tell you my reactions.

I have to take my hat off to DC for pulling off one heck of a recovery after the mixed and often harsh criticisms of the first teaser trailer for the film as well as a general lack of faith in their movie lineup.  Despite that though, they have come back with a (perhaps too long) new trailer that showcases the exciting set pieces, characters and heart of their movie. The trailer delivers our best look yet at the story of the film and how Batman and Superman come into conflict but I have a bit of an issue: is there an actual villain in this movie? Sure there's Lex Luthor (oh, we'll get onto that in a second) but there still needs to be a physical threat to cause these heroes to team up. I've heard some rumours about Superman villain Doomsday making an appearance but, if that is true, I will be more angry at DC than ever before for wasting the potential for a great Superman sequel film.

I am going to come out and admit that I was wrong about Ben Affleck as Bruce Wayne and Batman. I didn't think that he could become the physically imposing figure Batman is. I didn't think he could pair that with the playboy aspect of Bruce Wayne. How so very wrong I was. Affleck looks like he has achieved the mix perfectly and he makes clear the deep anger of his Batman towards Superman for the deaths of people he knew at different points. On the other hand, both Gal Gadot's Wonder Woman and Jesse Eisenberg's Lex Luthor still trouble me. While Gadot's looks like Wonder Woman and has put on some more muscle, I can't help but notice that she did not speak in the trailer. There could be a reason for that. As for Lex Luthor, Jesse Eisenberg is playing - surprise, surprise - Jesse Eisenberg. He is just playing the socially awkward, manipulative guy that he always plays, although he has added an extra creepiness to his voice this time around. He just does not strike me as the Luthor to match Henry Cavill's Superman (not to mention the the has HAIR!).

The action of the film looks like every other Zack Snyder film: flashy, fast-paced, and exciting. And that's not a bad thing. They are clearly building up to the epic brawl between the company's two figureheads but it was reassuring to see that other action sequences make up the movie as well. While some can criticise Snyder for poor characters and story on some occasions, one thing is undeniable: the man knows great cinematography and how to make a great effect.

So those are my reactions to the new Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice trailer. I hope you can see that I am both REALLY excited to see this movie and REALLY nervous about other aspects. Here's hoping Snyder and writer David S. Goyer have put together something special here for fans and general moviegoers alike.
